Monthly Skill Focus
As discussed, each month we teach a youth a specific basic living skill. October is all about Self-Discovery!
Self-Discovery is a crucial step for our youth and young adults to understand their interests, explore new opportunities, and identify potential causes of delinquent behavior. Through various activities and discussions, we aim to help them find their passions and steer clear of negative influences. This journey of self-awareness fosters resilience/perseverance (July's skills), confidence, and a sense of purpose, empowering them to develop plans (August's skill) on how to navigate life’s challenges with clarity and conviction. Encouraging self-discovery helps young individuals to not only achieve their goals but also to lead fulfilling and authentic lives.

Meet Our Founder: Corey Harland
Corey Harland, M.S. in Criminal Justice – Specialization in Behavior Analysis, is the visionary behind House-Raising, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of youth through impactful interventions. Corey’s journey into leadership in children’s mental health began early, shaped by his experiences growing up with a single mother in the Air Force and Air National Guard. Facing poverty, isolation, and bullying, Corey developed a strong sense of integrity and self-reliance.
As an adult, Corey has continuously worked to better himself and serve others, overcoming personal challenges and finding stability through meaningful work and artistic expression. His extensive experience in case management for children with significant social, legal, and mental health challenges has fueled his vision for House-Raising: to empower and motivate children to see their potential paths for success.
Corey’s own experiences as an at-risk youth, including legal troubles, have deeply influenced his approach to creating House-Raising. These challenges have given him a unique perspective and a strong commitment to helping other young people navigate similar difficulties.
Corey’s expertise is recognized at the state level, where he serves on the State Advisory Council-Subcommittee on Children’s Mental Health and the Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy. He is also an active member of several professional associations, including The Coalition for Juvenile Justice and the NAACP.

Diving Deeper
Open Streets West Broadway We had an amazing time at Open Streets West Broadway in September. We were one of 250 vendors with an estimated 3,000 people turning out for the event. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with the community and share our mission.
Charity Bingo Event Join us, and hour hosts Nina DiAngelo and Monica West (pictured below), for a night of fun and fundraising on October 3rd. All proceeds will support House-Raising. There are additional opportunities to enter a raffle and win some wine gifts that were generously donated to House-Raising for such an event.
This partnership was chosen because both Nina and Monica pursued their passions and talents as drag artists and entrepreneurs. Nina transformed a vacant, old restaurant into a multi-venue space, contributing to the revitalization of the local community. This embodies the spirit that House-Raising aims to instill in its youth.
